The location of a home is important for many reasons. Even if it is not something thought about at the point of purchase, the resale value should be considered. It is also good to remember that the price of the home will be partly determined by the location. If you are not planning to make the property or apartment your long-term home, then location will only be important for resale value.

Some tips to bear in mind when selecting the location for a home are:

  • How close is it to work or school if it will be used as a family home? This factor is also important to real estate developers who are seeking property to build family homes or apartments. If the daily commute will be difficult, the location chosen may be a problem.
  • Avoid areas that have industrial complexes in close proximity to residential housing. Living too close to commercial or industrial areas can have a number of negative implications. The noise and pollution levels may be too high for starters.

While it is true that many people successfully purchase or sell real estate on their own it is not the best option for everyone. That being said, you should take some time to select a real estate agent to represent your interests.

When searching for a real estate agent there are certain questions that should be asked. Some, which will depend on whether you are a buyer or seller are:

  • How long they have been in the business is relevant once you are talking to a real estate agent. It does not matter whether you are looking to buy or sell. How many sales they have handled during that time is could also be considered.
  • A buyer may want to know how many houses or apartments they will be shown over a period.
  • If you are selling you will want to know what efforts will be made to put your house on the market. How will it be listed and where?
  • What are the rates? Real estate agents do not work for free so you need to know their percentage will be.

Before making a final decision it also makes sense to do some background checks. These will ascertain if the agent is registered and if any complaints have been lodged against them. Getting references is also desirable as you want to know the professional and personal quality of someone you will be dealing with. You should try to call the references and talk to them yourself.

The process of selling or buying a house can be time-consuming and technical. Having a trained real estate agent acting on your behalf can help save you time and money.
